About William H. Scharf

William H. Scharf is a Charleston attorney practicing in the areas of tax and estate planning. He is a member of the West Virginia State Bar Committee on Probate, of which he was the Chairman from 1987-1990, and a member of the American Bar Association and its Section of Taxation. He is past-President of the Charleston Estate Planning Council (1998-1999).

He has been a frequent lecturer for the West Virginia Continuing Legal Education Program, The West Virginia Society of Certified Public Accountants, and has written several articles relating to taxation, including “Buy-Sell Agreements Can Endanger a Corporation’s NOL Carryovers,” 18 Estate Planning Magazine 22 (Jan.-Feb. 1991), and has contributed to the West Virginia Practice Handbook chapter on “Administration of Decedents’ Estates” (1996, 2000).

Mr. Scharf received his A.B. degree, cum laude, from Georgetown University and his J.D. degree from the University of Michigan Law School. He was attorney-adviser to the late Judge Norman O. Tietjens, United States Tax Court, Washington, D.C., from 1971-73. He was a member of the West Virginia Law Institute Advisory Committee for the Intestate Succession/Spouse’s Statutory Share Project, 1989 – 1992.
